John 8:31-32
The scripture for today is John 8:31-32
John 8:31-32 Then said Jesus to those Jews who believed on Him, If you continue in my word, then are you my disciples indeed; And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Verse 32 of our text for today is often quoted, “you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” But verse 31, provides the necessary context. Those who continuously follow the word of Christ will experience the freedom that His word brings. “And it is only when we receive the truth, love it, keep it, and walk in it, that we are the genuine disciples of Christ.” Adam Clarke
The Pharisees, who heard Jesus speak these words, were not receptive. In fact, they were offended. After all, they were the descendants of Abraham, and because of their heritage, considered themselves free. They were so blind that they could not see their bondage. "They answered Him, we are Abraham's descendants, and were never in bondage to any man: how say you, you shall be made free?" John 8:33 While they claimed to be children of Abraham, they were controlled by Satan and additionally lived under the tyranny of the Roman empire.
“Every soul that refuses to give himself to God is under the control of another power. He is not his own. He may talk of freedom, but he is in the most abject slavery. He is not allowed to see the beauty of truth, for his mind is under the control of Satan. While he flatters himself that he is following the dictates of his own judgment, he obeys the will of the prince of darkness. Christ came to break the shackles of sin-slavery from the soul." Ellen White, The Desire of Ages p. 466
Jesus provides the steps to freedom to those who hear Him, believe in Him, continue in His Word, and know the truth. The truth that you continue in will make you free from the bondage of sin. We were born in sin and without Christ, we are controlled by its power. But God has given us His Son, and Jesus invites us to, follow Him, continue in His word, be His disciples, and live in freedom.
God bless you as you continue in His service.
