The scripture for today is Mark 12:17

Mark 12:17 And Jesus answering said unto them, render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marveled at him.

The Pharisees tried on numerous occasions to trap Jesus in His words. In this attempt, they asked Jesus a question that they thought would require a yes or no answer. “Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?  Shall we give, or shall we not give?” Either a yes or no answer would have given cause to level an accusation against the Savior. But Jesus was full of wisdom, wisdom that was beyond their comprehension. His answer to their question was not what they expected. In fact, it left them speechless.

Had the Jews not been under Roman sovereignty, they would not have been using Roman money, for each nation produced its own currency; but they brought to Jesus the very thing that bore witness against them that Roman sovereignty was established in their land, and consequently they were obligated to pay tribute to the government that ruled them.

But the last part of Jesus’ answer to them was the most powerful point, “and unto God, what is God’s.”  Jesus saw no conflict with paying rightfully owed taxes or tributes to the government, but He also asserted that there is a higher power than the government; the power of God is ultimately in control. He is the one to whom all tribute is due. The thing which matters most is not that which satisfies the demands of the political power, but that which satisfies the requirements of the eternal Holy God.

“Nothing is more likely to ensnare the followers of Christ, than bringing them to meddle with disputes about worldly politics.” Matthew Henry

As our focus moves beyond that which occupied the minds of the Pharisees, we see God as the Head of all. He alone is the One whom we seek to please. We choose to obey Him and follow the dictates of His Spirit. It is because of Him that we do what we do. It is written in His word, “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.” Romans 13:1 “Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.” Romans 13:7

As we follow the Word of God His blessings will be upon our lives. There is no need to fret about the world or the political condition of the country. We must realize that ultimately God has everything under control. Things will culminate just as He said.

God bless you as you continue in His service.
